Applegate Dam is located on the Applegate River 23 miles southwest of Medford, Oregon. The Applegate project was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1962 and construction was completed in the fall of 1980 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE). The project provides flood control, irrigation, fish and wildlife enhancement, recreation and water quality control benefits.
The project, as proposed by Symbiotics LLC, will have an installed capacity of 10 mW generated from two vertical Francis turbine units (5 mW each). The use of two units will allow for the efficient usage of currently regulated release flows which range from 100 to 825 cfs. There will be no modifications to the existing structures upstream of the flood control and temperature control gates. All proposed structures to be added are downstream of these locations.

As a run-of-river operation, the Applegate Dam Hydroelectric Project will use only available water released from the reservoir by the ACOE. The estimated monthly power generation will range from 1.69 gWh (November) to a high of 6.67 gWh May). On average, the annual production would be 44.3 gWh.
The preliminary permit was issued by the FERC on September 25, 2001 to Symbiotics LLC. One year later (September 18, 2002), Symbiotics submitted a Stage I Consultation Document to the agencies. Proposed studies were undertaken during the following year and are still continuing. On June 16, 2004, the Draft License Application (Stage II) was mailed. A Final License Application was submitted to the FERC on August 31, before the expiration of the Preliminary Permit.
