Energy in the News

May 7, 2008
Electricity prices continue to make headlines. The 5/7/2008 edition of Wall Street Journal reported “Expect a Jolt When Opening the Electric Bill” Potomac Electric in the East is requesting a 29% rate increase while Portland General in the West is requesting a 9% rate increase on top of the 10% increase granted last year. Fuel costs (coal and natural gas) are cited as the driving forces behind the requests. At $99.50/ton Appalachian coal has more than double in price since in early 2007, when it was $45/ton. Closing Tuesday at $11.15/MMBtu, natural gas is up 45% from early 2007.
