Symbiotics LLC | A New Generation of Hydropower

Letter to Editor published in Houston (Texas) Chronicle on 4/8/2008:

Tom Fowler’s 4/4/2008 Front Page article about the high cost of connecting Texas wind generation capacity from West Texas where the people aren’t to Central and East Texas where the people are should be a wake up call to the people of Texas and the people of the United States.

There ain’t no free lunch. Cheap, reliable, clean wind energy isn’t cheap. We learned [a couple of months ago when a cold front moving through Texas shut down much of the expected output].that cheap, reliable, clean wind energy isn’t reliable. We are left with clean.

Well then why are we building so much expensive fickle power? Two reasons. Most other choices are worse, and as Fowler mentions, “state and federal incentives encourage such projects” In other words wind is feeding at the public trough. I like wind energy to a certain extent, but 24,000 more megawatts? Let’s encourage some other sensible energy sources first. Like what? Like solar energy and hydropower for example. Even Texas has rivers with existing water containment structures that aren’t being used to generate electricity and Lord knows we got the sun.
