Symbiotics | A New Generation of Hydropower

Applegate Dam is located 23 miles southwest of Medford, Oregon on the Applegate River. Authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1962, construction of Applegate Dam was completed in the fall of 1980 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam provides flood control, irrigation, fish and wildlife enhancement, recreation and water quality control benefits.

The FERC issued a new license for the Applegate Dam Hydroelectric Project on December 17, 2009. The project will have an installed capacity of 10 MW from two turbine/generator units, with an average annual production of 44.3 GWh. Final engineering is ongoing and the construction is scheduled to commence in 2011.

One component of the state and federal license is a Resource Protection and Mitigation Agreement to ensure that the project will be a net benefit for local fish and wildlife. The Applegate Dam Hydroelectric Project will include features to allow for downstream fish passage for any anadromous fish species seeking to pass downstream of Applegate Dam.
