Hydropower Projects
John H. Overton Lock and Dam is located on the Red River, 14 miles downstream of Alexandria, Louisiana. John H. Overton Lock and Dam is the second lock and dam in a series of five known collectively as the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway Project. This project was authorized in 1968 to improve commercial navigation on the river by straightening river bends, stabilizing banks and maintaining a 9-foot-deep channel for boat traffic. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of the John H. Overton Lock and Dam in 1983 and completed the project in 1987. The facility currently provides commercial navigation access and recreation opportunities.
In 2008, Symbiotics began state and federal licensing for a run-of-river hydroelectric project on John H. Overton Lock and Dam on behalf of Red River Hydro LLC. Using three turbine/generator units, the proposed project will have installed capacity of 78 MW.
